Old wooden pierTake to the wheel and become the Captain of your Career

Are you stuck in a job that’s no longer getting you excited, but too scared to leave? It’s an awkward situation to be in. Do you give up a secure job to jump ship and take a dip into the deep murky ocean that is the job market? Or do you stick at it and sail that ship to shore?

Well, you will be pleased to know that you don’t need to walk the plank just yet! There is a way to reinvigorate your career, and bring the excitement and passion back into your role. All it takes is a bit of get up and go, a proactive mindset and the will to improve your job satisfaction. So, ask yourself, are you ready to take action?

Career Crafting allows you to take to the wheel and steer your career in the direction you wish.

By evaluating your role and moulding it to take into account your strengths, motives and passions, you can take control and transform your role into one that excites you once again.

In order to Career Craft effectively, there are three things that you need to consider:

  1. Tasks: What are the day-to-day tasks that you really enjoy and how could you expand these and progress them?
  2. Relationships: How can you extend your network to increase the interaction you have with people who have similar passions and interests?
  3. Perceptions: Can you change the way you look at your role? Every job will involve tasks that aren’t so interesting or exciting, but it’s how you think about those necessary parts of the role that’s important.

The important thing to remember is that Career Crafting is led by YOU. It’s up to you to take the initiative and ultimately, take action. But remember, this will not only benefit you, but your employer too – if you decide you want to be employed that is!

By utilising your strengths, you will be able to perform better and therefore increase the potential for greater career opportunities.

So what are you waiting for? Take hold of the wheel, decide on your course, and steer your ship in the direction you wish.

“So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
Mark Twain

“We live in a world of unprecedented change. We are immersed in unpredictability and complexity.” Sue Knight, NLP at Work 3rd edition

It’s the career news that many people dread to hear. The company that you work for is ‘restructuring’… but what exactly does that mean? Is the world about to come crashing down around you? Of course not, but it may well feel like that!

All too quickly, the possibility of career change can spiral out of control and you can begin to lose perspective on the situation, holding you back and not allowing you to move on or find the positive in the situation.

Having recently run a series of successful Managing Change Workshops, we have enabled many people to embrace change and gain perspective in order to cope with what can at first be an extremely daunting situation. The secret? Put yourself into someone else’s shoes. Looking at the situation from a different perspective can give you an alternative way of viewing the situation. This can even change your emotional response

Perhaps this is actually a fantastic opportunity for you to manage career change and change direction or try something new, but if you allow yourself to become blinded by worry and unnecessary panic, then that’s an opportunity wasted! In a world of increasing change, being able to manage your emotions and embrace the situation is an invaluable skill.

“Change is the only certainty in this world today and the pace of change is ever increasing.” Colin Show, Dealing with Ambiguity: The New Business Imperative

What is a well-formed outcome?

What on earth is a well-formed outcome we hear you ask? It’s your mission statement. “Your  being the most important word. This is not about anyone else – this is about what you want to achieve; you need to own it and ultimately, commit to maintaining it!

Why should I write a well-formed outcome?

When you stop and look back at the end of the year, what do you want to have achieved? Your well-formed outcome gives you a goal that is achievable, yet will challenge you and push you to reach new heights. Make it exciting! I heard an interview with Victoria Pendleton recently and her tip was to make sure that you are completely passionate about achieving your goals – what will it mean to you?

How do I write a well-formed outcome?

So now you’re wondering how to write a well-formed outcome… there are five simple elements to ensure yours is a success.

S = SENSES: Start with the senses. When you’re writing your outcome bring it to life using all your senses. Imagine how you’ll feel when you achieve your outcome – what will you see? Hear? Feel? Smell? Taste? By bringing it to life, you’ll be able to connect with your goals more easily, and it will become more real in your mind – something that will become a reality!

P = POSITIVE & PRESENT: State your outcome only in positive terms. No ‘I don’ts’ allowed! Using negative language makes our brains focus this – the risks, the costs, the things that will need to be overcome rather than focusing in on the positive and the things that are going to be achieved. This way, when you read it back it will be an assertive, positive goal that is going to happen. Also, write your well-formed outcome in the present tense – If you write it in future tense – perhaps it will always be in the future!

A = ACTION: To achieve your goals you need to take action, as well as take responsibility. When writing use an active voice, and take charge of your goal. Identify three key actions that you need to take to get the ball rolling. Even if you only have 10 minutes, getting started is the hardest part, so get the momentum going right away.

C = CHALLENGE: Think about the cost of your well-formed outcome. Not just in terms of money, but in terms of time, overcoming old fears and beliefs, and pushing yourself to achieve this new goal. Well-formed outcomes are there to stretch you, and get you out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself, are you willing to take the next step?

E = ENGAGE:  There’s no point spending time building a well-formed outcome if you lose momentum and don’t achieve your goal. There is nothing more demotivating! Consider how you will keep the motivation up whilst you’re working to achieve your outcome. Ensure the language is positive and energizing, so that when you read it back it excites you and feeds the passion.  Then revert to that age-old trick – print it out and stick it somewhere you have to face it every single day!

And lastly, make sure that you give yourself some SPACE so you can achieve your well-formed outcome. We’d love to receive your well-formed outcomes so please do email us at support@careerambitions.co.uk. And of course coaching is a great way to ensure that you maintain the momentum and commitment!

Professional Networking is so important for your career. In this day and age, it’s simply not enough to just go to work every day and stay confined within the cosy four walls of your office. For yourself, and for your company, it’s important to leave the office confines once in a while and find out what is going on in the outside world. It is if your career is important to you anyway!

Employers are looking for candidates who are passionate about their job, and about the industry in which they are working. One way to show your dedication is by getting involved with external events – whether that’s going to professional networking events, listening to industry speakers, getting involved with community causes… By expressing interest you are indicating that you are looking for more, and likely to become a bigger influence than the colleague sat next you to working the 9 to 5.

Not only does it demonstWebrate your worth to current employers, it can also be invaluable for yourself. Imagine if circumstances were to change and you were booted out of the comfort zone of those four walls, and thrown into the unknown of the job market. Would you be able to stand on your own two feet? Would you have the confidence to go out, network, keep up with the industry and ultimately find a new job? Redundancy is a horrible situation, but an even worse one if you’ve become comfortable and lazy, and shied away from the professional networking scene.

No matter what your job situation, it’s vital to keep yourself entangled in the professional networking web. It isn’t just about meeting new people, it’s so much more.

To read on and find out what a difference professional networking can make to you and your career, join the Career Ambitions Club for free today

Recently, I was chatting to my hairdresser about the Coaching Skills Programme that I ran in Germany last week. I loved every minute of it – coaching and training is my passion and there I was doing both! She then shared what Billy Elliot in the film replied when being asked: “What does it feel like when you’re dancing?”

“…. I’ve got this fire in my body. I’m just there. Flyin’ like a bird. Like electricity. Yeah, like electricity.”

My hairdresser Jackie said that when she is cutting hair she feels “like electricity”! She gets such a buzz. Katherine and I often talk about how lucky we are to have careers that we love. But hey – we often make our own luck!

Gallup, the Washington, D.C. based polling organization researched employee engagement in 142 countries worldwide from 230,000 full-time and part-time workers found that only 13% of employees are engaged in their jobs.

Just 13%!!

In the United Kingdom we did fare slightly better with 17% engaged, 57% not engaged and 26% actively disengaged.

So what is the reason that so many people put up with being disengaged at work? Security? Fear of the unknown? Not knowing what options are there for them and what steps they need to take to make the change?

I changed my career in my mid 40s and prior to that I must have driven my family and friends mad with my frustration of not knowing what I really wanted to do. I felt like a square peg in a round hole. One of the clues to finding the perfect career for me was that as a child I loved to solve jigsaw puzzles!

And career coaching is like searching for all the jigsaw pieces and then putting them together without having a picture.

Are you one of the 87%? Are you not engaged or actively disengaged in your work? Do you want to have a new career that will energise you and even feel like electricity?

“The sessions with Lindsey and Katherine helped me regain my focus and enabled me to look forward.  In particular, they encouraged me to consider what I was looking for in my next job, how to improve my CV to sell my strengths, and how to have more confidence in my own abilities to achieve my goals.  I definitely recommend them”.  Stuart Gibbons, Cambridge
