What is a well-formed outcome?
What on earth is a well-formed outcome we hear you ask? It’s your mission statement. “Your” being the most important word. This is not about anyone else – this is about what you want to achieve; you need to own it and ultimately, commit to maintaining it!
Why should I write a well-formed outcome?
When you stop and look back at the end of the year, what do you want to have achieved? Your well-formed outcome gives you a goal that is achievable, yet will challenge you and push you to reach new heights. Make it exciting! I heard an interview with Victoria Pendleton recently and her tip was to make sure that you are completely passionate about achieving your goals – what will it mean to you?
How do I write a well-formed outcome?
So now you’re wondering how to write a well-formed outcome… there are five simple elements to ensure yours is a success.
S = SENSES: Start with the senses. When you’re writing your outcome bring it to life using all your senses. Imagine how you’ll feel when you achieve your outcome – what will you see? Hear? Feel? Smell? Taste? By bringing it to life, you’ll be able to connect with your goals more easily, and it will become more real in your mind – something that will become a reality!
P = POSITIVE & PRESENT: State your outcome only in positive terms. No ‘I don’ts’ allowed! Using negative language makes our brains focus this – the risks, the costs, the things that will need to be overcome rather than focusing in on the positive and the things that are going to be achieved. This way, when you read it back it will be an assertive, positive goal that is going to happen. Also, write your well-formed outcome in the present tense – If you write it in future tense – perhaps it will always be in the future!
A = ACTION: To achieve your goals you need to take action, as well as take responsibility. When writing use an active voice, and take charge of your goal. Identify three key actions that you need to take to get the ball rolling. Even if you only have 10 minutes, getting started is the hardest part, so get the momentum going right away.
C = CHALLENGE: Think about the cost of your well-formed outcome. Not just in terms of money, but in terms of time, overcoming old fears and beliefs, and pushing yourself to achieve this new goal. Well-formed outcomes are there to stretch you, and get you out of your comfort zone. Ask yourself, are you willing to take the next step?
E = ENGAGE: There’s no point spending time building a well-formed outcome if you lose momentum and don’t achieve your goal. There is nothing more demotivating! Consider how you will keep the motivation up whilst you’re working to achieve your outcome. Ensure the language is positive and energizing, so that when you read it back it excites you and feeds the passion. Then revert to that age-old trick – print it out and stick it somewhere you have to face it every single day!
And lastly, make sure that you give yourself some SPACE so you can achieve your well-formed outcome. We’d love to receive your well-formed outcomes so please do email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. And of course coaching is a great way to ensure that you maintain the momentum and commitment!
